Square Dance

Florian Gruber

Square dance is designed as 1 hour audio-visual live performance. Based on a classical chess pattern and four selected colors, the composition dynamically generates new polygonal forms and figures. The composition moves synchronously to the music and varies its speed, color shading, size, horizontal and vertical transformation due to the frequencies played on oscillator, synthesizer and drum machine. The machine has an “will” of its own and by controlling it intentionally, the composition offers a intriguing game of coded rules, chance and improvised electronic music. Square dance consists of an visual pattern machine, a transcoding program for the LED fascade and a live arrangement of pre-recordered sounds. The whole set is controlled via a Lemur Multitouch Controller interface.
